AI is going to be in every supply chain worker's future. So, the best course of action is to embrace the technology and learn to use it effectively. Company leadership and individuals need to learn digital skills to better interact with AI.
Skills Employees Need
The first skill has nothing to do with AI, but is something it will never replace, interpersonal communication. With the onslaught of all these digital reformations, companies need workers who are good at effective communication. As the Harvard Business Review puts it, "Our interviews reveal that while technical skills get more press, it is these uniquely human skills that companies need - and find to be in short supply in today's marketplace."
Another skill employees need is digital expertise with AI and adaptation to its changes. First, workers need to know the potential applications of AI in their projects and daily tasks. Next, they have to learn to think critically on what processes it should be implemented into. Everything can't be automated and tasks that can, need to be done correctly. AI can only help when the correct process is implemented with a clear directive on its duties.
Although SCM has many ways it can benefit from AI, it is the human perspective that will become the competitive advantage once AI adoption is commonplace. But currently, companies can create advantages by leveraging the technologies others aren't. It's the job of managers and employees to integrate with this to improve their respective company's overall performance.
